On February 6 (Saturday), The National Museum of Art, Osaka curator Masahiro Yasuki and Chiyo Maekawa, director of the Children's Book Forest, held a talk event at Nakanoshima Children's Book Forest.
Due to the announcement of the declaration of a state of emergency this time, there were no actual visitors, only online distribution was held.

"The relationship between art and picture books and the history of painting" talks from the viewpoint of Yasuki, who handles art works, and "Picture book unique charm created with text and picture" talks by Director Maekawa, who has a deep knowledge of picture books and children's books.
There was a difference in the way each of the two approaches to picture books, which was interesting.
The picture books introduced by Yasuki are the following three picture books by contemporary Japanese artists.
"Mokomoko" (written by Shuntaro Tanikawa picture: Sadamasa Motonaga Publishing: Bunken published by Bunken), "Friends Wanted Koinu" (written by Yoshitomo Nara Publishing Company: Magazine House), "Yumerai On Ha Yumemiru" (written by Ryu Murakami Publishing Company: Kaikai Kiki).
Yasugi understands that the synergistic effect of paintings and sentences creates new expressions, and that the artist's unknown inner surface can be seen through the story.

He also explained the transition from religious paintings to modern paintings, and the connection between them and picture books while touching on avant-garde art, reproduction art such as prints and designs, and post-war art movements from the context of children's paintings.
Next, Director Maekawa will talk about how to enjoy picture books while introducing two favorite books.
First of all, "Prince Wen and Tiger" (written by Chen Jianhon, translated by Atsushi Hiraoka) with impressive powerful paintings drawn in traditional Chinese painting "Monochrome ink painting".
From the cover, from the door, to the beginning of the story, we will thoroughly unravel the composition of the whole picture book.

The other book is "Ippo, Niho ..." (written by Charlotte Zolotow picture: Roger Duvoisin translated by Natsuko Hoshikawa Publishing Company: Fairy Tale Museum) with impressive vivid pictures.
Director Maekawa explained the warmth of spring felt from the cover drawn in Mihara colors and the meaning of the title in his own way.
After the commentary, we will introduce what kind of facility the Children's Book Forest Nakanoshima is like while walking around the museum.
The conversation ended with how to attract books and what they have in common with museums became hot topics, touching on the ingenuity elaborated in the Children's Book Forest and the role of each museum.

After listening to this talk event, I was reminded of the depth of "picture books and art" that are spoken from a different perspective.
We look forward to seeing Nakanoshima develop into a place of art and culture through art and picture books.
