Isaac Julien - Ten Thousand WAVES Opening Ceremony Isaac Julien Artist Talk

From March 27, 2024 (Wednesday), Isaac Julien will be held at Espas Louis Vuitton Osaka. – TEN Thousand Waves exhibition will be held. The exhibition will be held under the "Hors-les-mur" program, which introduces the collections of Fonda Zion Louis Vuitton, and will exhibit a magnificent video installation "Ten Thousand Waves" using nine screens produced in 2010.
In commemoration of the exhibition, Espas Louis Vuitton Osaka and Creative Island Nakanoshima will hold a special artist talk event for Isaac Julian, who will come to Japan for the opening of the exhibition. Hiroki Ogasawara of Kobe University, who has been interacting with Julian for many years and has also discussed Julian's work, will serve as the listener. We will explore Julian's works widely, including works exhibited at Espas Louis Vuitton Osaka.

Isaac Julien (Isaac Julien)
Sir Isaac Julian was born in London in 1960 to parents who moved from Saint Lucia Island in the West Indies to U.K. Graduated from St Martins School of Fine Arts in 1984 and received a bachelor's degree in art and video. I work while traveling back and forth between London and Santa Cruz, California, USA.
In response to the social unrest of the U.K. under Margaret Thatcher's administration, he co-founded San Cofa Film and Video Collective in 1983 with Martina Atir, Maureen Blackwood, Nadine Marsh-Edwards, Robert Cruz and others. In 1991, he founded his own video production company Normal Films. In the same year, the feature film Young Seoul Levels was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival Critics Week. He won many other awards and titles, among which he was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2001 and won the Jury Prize in 2003 at the Kunst Film Biennale in Cologne, Germany. In 2017, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire Commander (CBE), and in 2022 he was awarded the title of Knight.
Julian's work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, screenings and film festivals, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum (New York), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), Tate Britain (London), the Pompidou Centre (Paris), Guggenheim Bilbao (Spain), and House der Kunst (Munich).

Hiroki Ogasawara:
1968 Professor, Graduate School of International Culture, Kobe University. Sociology PhD, London University, Goldsmith. My major is sociology/cultural studies. We are studying the relationship between popular culture and racism. He has authored a number of books, including "Tell the Truth and In Its Complications: Thinking of Stuart Hall" (Shinsensha, 2019). Regarding "Black Art" between Julian and the United Kingdom, "About Isaac Julien's recent trilogy of Visualizing Unvisible Capital" (Cultural Studies Vol. 3, 2016) and "The Past and Future of" Black Art "Research: Possibilities and Challenges in Japan" (Talk with Hiroko Hagiwara, April 2023).
