Nakanoshima Promotion Cruise Project “Economic and Science of the Modern and Modern Nakanoshima”

Nakanoshima, Osaka and its surroundings are cities that have been developed through the activities of people since the early modern era. We will hold a special tour to tour the trajectory of Osaka's academic and scientific history from the Edo period to the present day by boat. Please talk about economic activities at Dojima Rice Market and Kurayashiki in the early modern era, scientists of the same era, such as Tekijyuku, and enjoy talk and scenery from the viewpoint of science, such as copper refining technology, which was along with economic activities such as finance.

Speaker Profile

Yasuo Takatsuki (Associate Professor, Institute of Economic and Management, Kobe University)
Graduated from the Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo. He specializes in the history of Japanese economy. Focusing on the financial industry of the Edo period from the study of the Dojima Rice Association in Osaka, he elucidated the modernization of Japan from the viewpoint of financial history. Major authors include "Osaka Dojima Rice Market: Edo shogunate vs Market Economy" (Kodansha Hyundai Shinsho, 2018), "Financial History of Australian merchants: Financial Innovation Unraveled from Hirooka Family Documents" (Keio University Press, 2022). 

Kasuji (Director of Arts and Sciences, Osaka Science Museum)
Born in 1965. Completed Graduate School of Education, Osaka Kyoiku University. Curator of Osaka Science Museum since 1990. He specializes in the history of science and the spread of science, centered on astronomy in early modern Japan. He has authored "Kenkado Kimura" (co-authored by Shibunkaku, 2003), "Tadataka Ino Surveying Corps" (co-authored by Shogakukan, 2003), "Edo period of Astronomers-The Great Change of the Calendar and Space View" (Chikuma Shobo, 2016).
