Special Exhibition
Hiromi Tsuchida Photo Exhibition "Hiroshima Collection" - Summer 1945.

Since his debut as a photographer, Hiromi Tsuchida (1939-) has consistently photographed Japan after the war. Above all, Hiroshima Collection, which took photographs of the A-bombed materials of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, has become Tsuchida's life work, and since 2025, the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, the photographs of Tsuchida will give us an opportunity to reconsider Japan and its future.
In photographing the A-bombed materials, Tsuchida has been thoroughly striving to avoid private interpretations and emotional self-expressions. Instead of emphasizing tragic shapes and symbolisms, we focus on recording the materials themselves, such as familiar clothing and daily necessities, and emphasize the symbolic nature that everyone can recognize. On the other hand, under those symbols, specific episodes related to the material are attached as equivalent to those of the photograph. By doing so, Tsuchida tries to suggest that the catastrophe that took place in Hiroshima 80 years ago is connected to the present day-to-day life. To recognize them as our own problems—that is Tsuchida’s methodology chosen for “Hiroshima Collection.”
This exhibition presents the largest ever score, exceeding the exhibition of "Hiroshima Collection" at Carnegie International, 2023.
