Mutsuo Yanagihara (1934–) was born in Kochi City and studied pottery with Kenkichi Tomimoto (1886–1963) at Kyoto City University of Art (now Kyoto City University of Arts). After that, I was invited to the University of Washington and Alfred University in the United States for several years from the 1960s to the 1970s to spend several years in the United States. You will experience the trends of American art represented by abstract expressionism and pop art locally, and after returning to Japan, you will be attracted attention for your unique modeling work using vivid gold, silver and Aya. However, in the consciousness of "I will never throw away pottery", the artist will seek new expressions in the present age without denying the continuity of the rich culture of Japanese porcelain. Yanagihara says that the fun of pottery is "I can become a soloist as a personal expression, but I can do ensembles quickly."
In commemoration of the donation of four works by Mutsuo Yanagihara, this exhibition will display 41 works by Yanagihara, including a private collection, as well as 16 photographic works by flower artist Kazuya Sugita with flowers in Yanagihara's work. We will reconsider the nature of the pottery that the artist has been the theme of.
