Established in 1973, the Kosetsu Museum of Art welcomes its 50th anniversary this year. Part of our museum’s mission has been to exhibit and preserve the invaluable cultural objects in our collection. To achieve this goal, we launched a full-scale restoration project of the collection in 2013. The restoration of cultural assets is a major undertaking that requires a high degree of skills, carefully selected materials, and special tools, together with the knowledge and commitment of many experts. Taking the cultural property status of each object into consideration, much time and care go into restoring each object while finding the best possible treatment. This exhibition features approximately thirty works from the museum’s collection that have undergone restoration. The exhibition introduces the conservators, researchers, the restored objects, and the techniques involved in the restoration process. This is a rare opportunity to learn “what is being done and why?” and explore how the collection has been restored in order to pass it on one hundred years into the future.
