Saeki Yuzo, a painter who resided in the cities of Osaka, Tokyo, and Paris a century ago, lived a short but remarkable life. Working as a painter full-time for just four short years after first arriving in Paris in 1924, Saeki developed his own unique style of painting urban landscapes. He is particularly known for a series of Parisian urban landscapes painted with delicate strokes that seem to dance across the canvas, which were executed after he went back to France following a brief return to Japan. His unique character still fascinates many people today. When we stand in front of Saeki's paintings, they conjure up visions of the painter looking across the landscape and running his brushes across the canvas. In the cityscapes that he has painted we can gain a sense of the painter’s inner life and his deep spirituality. As a result, his works are often seen as reflections of himself; they are self-portraits, of a sort. This exhibition focuses on the three cities that Saeki painted—Osaka, Tokyo, and Paris—and it examines the process by which the painter arrived at his own form of self-expression.
The exhibition will bring together representative works of the artist, mainly from the Saeki Yuzo collection of the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, which boasts the largest and finest collection of his works anywhere. The exhibition will show some works that are being displayed for the first time. It is also the first major retrospective of the artist’s works in fifteen years, providing a much-anticipated opportunity to rediscover the allure of Saeki’s art.
