Born in Oita City, Heihachiro Fukuda (1892–1974) moved to Kyoto at the age of 18 to study painting. After gaining recognition for his realistic works, and meticulously observing nature, he surprised people with his bold challenge in 1932 when he presented "Ripple" (Important Cultural Property, Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts). Subsequently, he continued to create works like "Bamboo" (Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art) and "Rain" (Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art), employing intricate details in color, shape, perspective, and composition, establishing a new era of art called "decorative paintings based on realism."
This exhibition, the first in Osaka and the first retrospective in Kansai in 17 years showcases approximately 120 masterpieces from the early period to the late works. Among them is "Clouds" (Oita Prefectural Art Museum), a work being publicly displayed outside its home museum for the first time. The exhibition delves into the artist's vibrant emotions and unique perspectives, introducing sketches that convey the painter's self-proclaimed "sketching madness" and exploring the background behind the creation of his masterpieces.
Experience the bright world of Heihachiro Fukuda that continues to offer a fresh sense of wonder to viewers, inviting them to connect with the beauty of nature.
