Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka and The Kansai Osaka 21st Century Association are pleased to present Osaka Directory 6 supported by RICHARD MILLE: KIHARA Yuika.
Kihara studied photography, and built a practice based on the relationship between place and physical presence. She focused on what are known in Japanese as Unidentified decedent (the bodies of people whose identities are unknown, and thus remain unclaimed), interrogating the ambiguity of human existence.
This exhibition presents new works inspired by anime seichi junrei. The original meaning of seichi junrei is “pilgrimage to a sacred place,” but these days it refers to fans visiting real-life locations that have served as the settings for anime productions. For this new series, Kihara physically visited specific locations where anime characters had “been," creating works that attempt to destabilize the boundaries between fictional existence and the real world.
