Nakanoshima is a human-made island between two rivers, about three kilometers long from east to west. Buildings over a century old designated as Important Cultural Properties and museums designed by renowned architects stand alongside clusters of skyscrapers, offering a remarkable glimpse into the evolution of urban development and architecture.
The video exhibition Builders: Reconsidering the City Based on Construction Records presents construction footage preserved by companies and other organizations. In particular, films from the 1930s, during the Greater Osaka era, and from the 1960s, during postwar reconstruction, capture not only the cityscapes of those times but also the civil engineering skills and physical labor of builders, along with the tribulations and triumphs of carrying out massive projects. These invaluable records offer a panoramic view of the area’s enduring urban vitality and the layers of memory accumulated over generations.
